Girls orphanage
The Care for Children Foundation (CfC) was established in 2002 to build an orphanage for girls in the town of Minethouk on Lake Inle in Myanmar. The building was completed in 2004 and the first orphaned girls could be taken in. In the year 2000, a boys' orphanage had already been built in Minethouk. That was paid for by the Myanmar Children's Association at the time. When this NGO stopped supporting the boys' orphanage in 2007, the Care for Children Foundation took over the management of this house. Since then we manage two orphanages.
The girls
Currently 60 girls live in the girls' orphanage, of which 23 are orphans and 27 are half orphans. Ten girls still have both parents, but they cannot take care of them because they are very poor. The youngest of the group is 6 years old and the oldest is 18 years old. Many girls come from one of the many ethnic minorities that live around Lake Inle. Most of them have their own traditional clothing, which they are very proud of.
The accommodation
The girls' orphanage is a well-maintained building. It is within walking distance of the boys' orphanage. Both houses are very similar in construction. The building has a number of large spaces where the girls can study, recreate and watch television. All facilities are in order. Each house also has a computer room.
The kitchen
The kitchen is located at the girls' house, where cooking is done daily for the girls and the boys. The older girls take turns helping our cook Daw Mya Sein. That enjoy that..
Rice, meat, fish and oil are bought at the local market, but many of the vegetables come from their own vegetable garden. There is a lot of space around the houses to grow vegetables. Because the houses are located on the banks of Inle Lake, the soil is fertile. The kids enjoy helping staff member Daw Nilar Aye with the gardening.
Maintenance of the buildings
Every year we carry out maintenance on the girls' orphanage and the outbuildings. We find it important to keep these in good condition. In 2020 we put a new roof on the kitchen. We also installed new drinking water tanks and covered the large water reservoirs.
