In Myanmar, around 250 people have died as a result of Typhoon Yagi. In early September, Yagi swept across Myanmar, after the storm had also hit Vietnam, Laos and Thailand, among other countries. More than 600 people have died across the region. According to state media, 77 people are still missing. More than 260,000 hectares of rice fields and other crops have been destroyed by the floods. The United Nations warns that 630,000 people in Myanmar are in urgent need of aid.

Myanmar's military regime made a rare appeal to the international community for emergency aid after the typhoon. In the past, the country's military dictatorship has blocked humanitarian aid. The natural disaster that has hit Myanmar comes on top of political chaos in the country. In 2021, the military staged a coup d'état, which led to a popular uprising. An estimated 2.7 million people have fled as a result.
