The popular uprising, political instability, soaring inflation, international sanctions and irregular electricity supplies have discouraged international companies from doing business in Myanmar. In 2024, investment levels fell to a new low since the 2021 coup. All this amid violence and human rights abuses by the military. The figures were released by the Directorate of Investment and Company Administration (DICA), Myanmar’s junta-controlled business registry.

It is the ordinary people who suffer the most. Many international factories, companies and offices have closed their doors in the past four years, resulting in high unemployment.
